Submissions
The AFA and Professional Farrier ™ are eager to cultivate and encourage authorship within the farrier community, and especially within the AFA. We are happy to work with you as you develop ideas and concepts for publication. Prospective authors should feel free to seek assistance from Professional Farrier™ staff members and/or AFA Publications Committee members.

Any article dealing with farriery, farriers, and related pertinent subjects will receive consideration for inclusion. Although we accept profiles, humorous dialogues, and “feel-good” articles, our focus is on serving as the “voice” of the AFA, publishing material which promotes good farriery, and forwarding the association and its grounding principles of education, certification, communication, research, and innovation. All articles are blind-reviewed by at least two members of the AFA Publications Committee's Editorial Review Board.

While we welcome all submissions, we don't accept all formats. If it's written on a napkin, that's okay. But don't format it and put it in a MS Publisher file. If you took your pictures with an older camera, it's okay to send us a copy of the print, but don't send us your originals or your negatives! In general, we expect materials to be submitted in an electronic format: MS Word files for text and .jpeg or .pdf for photos. Please send photos so they are printable at 300dpi or greater.

Articles should be original and informative. We are not interested in printing press releases, “advertorial” pieces, promotional pieces, or blatant and excessive self-promotion or hype. Likewise, we're not interested in printing things to promote or further arguments or grudges.

Feature Articles
generally should not exceed 3,500 words, but we're open to longer pieces. (how-to, research, daily practices, farrier profiles, business issues, etc. Short Features

Trade Secrets
… Submissions for this department, intended for sharing tips and techniques to make our work easier, must be concise and useful and must be supported with photos. In general, the visual images should need little supportive or explanatory text.

The Muck Bucket
… The magazine staff usually generates this department, which features trivia, facts, and tidbits. However, we welcome your ideas and materials, and will gladly acknowledge your contributions and include credits. Freelance Writers… Not to be mean, but we're addressing a specialized audience, and most of the materials they're looking for is beyond the scope of what we can expect from authors outside the farrier and veterinary communities.
